The challenge

Franchise operators were managing shift schedules in Google Sheets, inventory in a legacy system, training completion in a third-party LMS, and team communication in WhatsApp groups. Data was never shared between these tools — a shift change had no connection to labour cost impact; a training completion had no visibility to the manager who needed to approve role elevation. The fragmentation was costing each franchise an estimated 8 hours per week in management overhead.

The solution

We designed a unified franchise operations platform with three interconnected modules: Scheduling (shift management with labour cost intelligence), Inventory (order, receive, and waste tracking with automated reorder triggers), and Training (structured learning paths with completion visibility tied to role permissions). A social layer connects the team — announcements, recognition, and shift-swap requests — with the operational context that makes them meaningful. Every module shares a single data model so changes in one surface in all others.

Our process

  1. 01 Franchise Shadow Research

Spent 2 weeks in 4 franchise locations (breakfast, lunch, and dinner shifts). Mapped all 11 tools and how they intersected — and failed to.

  2. 02 Unified Data Architecture

Designed the shared data model: staff, shifts, roles, training status, and inventory all in one schema. The connective tissue that makes the platform work.

  3. 03 Scheduling Module

Built a shift canvas with real-time labour cost calculation. Managers see cost impact of every scheduling decision as they make it.

  4. 04 Training & Permissions

Designed the training pathway system where module completion unlocks role capabilities. Makes career progression visible and motivating.

  5. 05 Social & Recognition Layer

Designed a lightweight social layer appropriate for a frontline workforce — announcements, kudos, and operational updates in one feed.
